Daiga Grantina's Four Sides of a Shadow create a play of light

On Sunday, March 31st, Z33, House for Contemporary Art, Design & Architecture in Hasselt, opens its doors to three new exhibitions: Leaps of Faith, Daiga Grantina: Four Sides of a Shadow and Riar Rizaldi: Fossilis. With the exhibition Four Sides of a Shadow, Daiga Grantina realizes her first institutional solo exhibition in Belgium.

First solo exhibition

With Four Sides of a Shadow, Z33 presents the first institutional solo exhibition in Belgium by Latvian artist Daiga Grantina. Grantina studied sculpture and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, but now lives and works in Paris. In 2019, she represented her home country at the Venice Biennale and since then her work has traveled within Europe and beyond: from Riga, Bergamo, London, and Paris to New York.

New perspective

In the exhibition, Grantina presents a major new body of work, which is complimented by older works. Her sculptures are sensitively tailored to fit the galleries of Z33, which places the space in a completely different perspective. In the historic exhibition wing, she creates a choreography of hollow, hanging resting forms. The sculptures are composed of simple materials – fabric, wood, rope, metal, wax – with careful attention to their sensory properties. The uncovered skylights in the rooms create spaces of illumination, because without light... shadow cannot exist.

The Four Sides of a Shadow

Grantina defines shadows as the intermediate link between the feelings of a figure and its surroundings, a psychological bridge between a person and a landscape. With Four Sides of a Shadow, she tries to give material form to the fleeting life of a shadow. This becomes clear throughout the exhibition, where Grantina plays with shadow and the color gray. Why the color gray? Gray is, like a shadow, an atmospheric effect and binder; it is both substance and veil. An invitation for the visitor to delve deeper into the embrace of a shadow.

Daiga Grantina: Four Sides of a Shadow can be seen at Z33 from March 31st to August 25th. More information about the new exhibitions via www.z33.be
