Vibeke Mascini - Gust

With Gust, Z33 presents a solo exhibition by artist Vibeke Mascini exploring breath, air and time. Through sculptures and sound works, she investigates how invisible phenomena can take on a tangible form.
“Gust acts as a hinge between inner experience and cosmic movement. For whilst a sigh can help you slow down your system, the word also refers to a breath of wind,” says Mascini
In the exhibition, Mascini juxtaposes different scales: “The movement of air in the lungs and the body, but also global weather systems. It makes the vast tangible in the small, and vice versa.” In her work, everything seems to form part of a single, shared respiratory system. She displays aeroplane windows coated with the dust of dried butterflies and a sound piece in which people who have recently undergone a lung transplant play the harmonica.
“Through breath, wind and sound, distant locations are connected to one another, as are bodies,” explains Mascini.
This interplay between the micro and the macro runs like a common thread through the whole. In her work, seemingly fragile elements become the bearers of larger structures: whiskers, flower buds, a hummingbird’s skeleton or the hands of a clock appear as vectors of movement and time.
Collaboration with Werktank
At the heart of the exhibition is a new astronomical clock, developed in collaboration with clockmaker Rudi Degeest and with support from Werktank in Leuven. The work challenges our conventional perception of time: “The clock is an instrument of great precision, whilst the universe is abstract. I imagine the clock as a storm in which particles from our wider environment engage in a kind of cosmic dance.” The clock is thus a scale model in which time is no longer linear, but fluid and layered.
Daisychain at Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre
At the same time , Vibeke Mascini’s solo exhibition Daisychain is on display at Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre, near Maastricht . In the Carriage House, she presents a cohesive installation of new works, in which electrical cables intertwine like rose branches, a cluster of hand-blown glass roses illuminates the space, and a system of tubes brings the living world from outside into the interior.
About the artist
Vibeke Mascini (1989, NL) lives and works in The Hague and Mexico City. Through installation, video, sound, and text, she explores how invisible forces such as energy, air, and time shape our experience of the world. In her work, she brings together scientific research, technological development, and sensory experience.
Through long-term collaborations with scientists, engineers, musicians, and other specialists, Mascini explores the relationships between people, materials, and the systems that connect them. Her installations make intangible processes perceptible, combining poetic observations with emerging technologies.
Mascini has exhibited at institutions including Capc Musée d’Art Contemporain, Bordeaux (FR, 2025), the Swiss Institute, New York (US, 2024), P////AKT, Amsterdam (NL, 2024), Nottingham Contemporary (UK, 2023), Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City (GT, 2023), and RADIUS Center for Contemporary Art & Ecology, Delft (NL, 2022).
She has participated in international residency programs, including the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (NL, 2021–2023), and the Delfina Foundation, London (UK, 2020). She earned a bachelor’s degree from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam (NL). Mascini was a long-time lecturer in visual arts at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague (NL, 2019–2025) and is a visiting lecturer at the Design Academy Eindhoven (NL) and ETH Zurich (CH).
