Z33 transforms into an extraterrestrial film set
Riar Rizaldi: Fossilis
On Sunday, March 31st, Z33, House for Contemporary Art, Design & Architecture in Hasselt, opens its doors to three new exhibitions: Leaps of Faith, Daiga Grantina: Four Sides of a Shadow and Riar Rizaldi: Fossilis. With the solo exhibition Fossilis by Riar Rizaldi, you instantly find yourself in an extraterrestrial film set.
Extraterrestiral setting
The relationship between science, fiction, and technology is central in the films of filmmaker Riar Rizaldi. This is translated into his first solo exhibition Fossilis, based on his film of the same name, in Belgium. In the exhibition spaces of Z33, certain sets and props from the film are built or depicted. You will feel as if you have entered a distant extraterrestrial setting.
From waste to film set
The decors of Rizaldi's film are entirely built from waste materials, such as a time machine made from the casing of a septic tank. It is an invitation to reflect on waste. What happens to it? Where does it go? With these questions in mind, you can see Fossilis as a confronting and bewildering response to the global production of electronic waste, much of which is dumped and buried in Asia.
Fiction or reality
Certain scenes in the film Fossilis are difficult to place, such as a tropical landscape strewn with rusted consumer goods or a "cannibal market" in Indonesia where machines are taken apart and sold for parts. This quickly raises the question of whether these scenarios are speculative future visions or reality.
